Adolescent Program

The Adolescent Program at Frye Regional Medical Center’s South Campus offers confidential, professional help to young people ages 12 to 17 who, because of serious emotional challenges, demonstrate any of the following conditions.
* Suicidal or homicidal ideation
* Co-existing substance abuse issues
* Psychotic disorders
* Severe behavioral disorders which are not manageable by family or school
* Depression or other emotional disorders which potentially endanger themselves or others

The treatment model of our adolescent program is multi-dimensional. (1) a behavioral component to reward growth and change, and (2) a psychotherapeutic element to address the psychological issues facing the adolescent and any psychiatric disorder that may be present. Because we believe that family members affect each other’s mental health, families are strongly encouraged to participate in family sessions. The family emphasis often includes education and suggested readings for parents.

Enthusiastic, caring professionals including nurses, mental health technicians, counselors, and teacher’s staff our programs. The psychiatrist acts as team leader, directing therapy, medication management and team treatment plan components. This multi-disciplinary team provides a variety of perspectives through which clients may evaluate their own decisions and process alternatives to current behavior patterns.

The Adolescent Program includes two treatment tracks: a psychiatric track and a dual-focus education program for those with co-existing substance abuse problems. The psychiatric track concentrates on building self-esteem through the acceptance of appropriate responsibility. This program also utilizes a point system, which provides the structure for behavior modification through group accountability. This motivational system targets personal responsibility and ownership for chosen behavior. Peer evaluation is a key to this system. The Frye School provides the educational component for the adolescent program. A part of the Hickory City School system, the Frye School has two teachers and two assistants. The curriculum includes all subjects typically offered at the elementary through high school levels.

Adult Psychiatric Unit

Frye's General Adult Psychiatric Unit targets both individuals with impaired cognitive functioning and adults whose cognitive abilities may enable them to benefit from group interaction and apply gained insight for personal growth. In this acute care setting, adult clients first work towards gaining reality orientation and earning increased independence within the context of a warm, secure environment. As patients progress, they can also explore their issues with a physician-directed team of specialists. The program offers continuous evaluation and assessments and combines therapeutic groups and interventions with the social work needs of this population.

The adult unit encompasses a wide range of treatment issues. The professionals on our team are experienced in assisting patients with:
* Depression
* Bipolar Disorders
* Psychosis/Schizophrenic Disorders
* Suicidal or Homicidal Ideation
* Anxiety, Panic Attacks or Phobias
* Marital Relationships or Family Problems
* Dementia-Related Behaviors

This program is designed to provide therapeutic stabilization for reality orientation. Additionally, through therapeutic groups and activities, patients receive education on a wide range of "life skills" such as: coping skills, self-esteem, relaxation, and anxiety/stress management. The program also assists patients struggling with unresolved past events of physical or sexual abuse to develop a realistic plan of how to appropriately address these issues in their future following stabilization.

Involuntary Commitment Service

Frye's South Campus Involuntary Commitment Service was created to provide emergency psychiatric care for adults 18 years old and older. This aspect of acute care allows adult patients to explore their issues with a physician-directed team of specialists dedicated to compassionate psychiatric care. All members of the staff are involved in the recovery process, meeting weekly to evaluate progress.

The informal setting of this program allows the patient to focus on personal growth and development, goal setting and problem solving. Individual group and family counseling, supplemented by leisure and recreational activities, provide the structure for daily living.

Medical Detox and Dual-Diagnosis

Frye Regional Medical Center's Inpatient Psychiatric Adult Program provides a safe and secure therapeutic environment in which adult patients can undergo Medical Detox for chemical dependency. This program also offers a specialized dual-focus education service that addresses both behavioral/mental health symptoms and the use of alcohol and drugs. The staff is dedicated to serving both medical detox and dual-diagnosed patients as part of Frye's comprehensive inpatient treatment for adults.

Our belief at Frye's South Campus is that substance abuse, addiction and compulsive behaviors are treatable conditions. The dual-focus education program addresses both psychiatric symptoms and various aspects of substance abuse/addiction. A multi-disciplinary team provides the following services for our adult patients:
* Medical detoxification
* A thorough assessment & individualized treatment plan
* Group Therapy
* Individual & Family Counseling
* Alcohol & Drug Education
* 12-Step Meetings (AA & NA)
* Therapeutic Activities & Coping Skills Education
* Occupational Therapy as needed and ordered by physician
* Comprehensive Aftercare Planning

Therapeutic Lifestyles and Changes (TLC) Unit

The Therapeutic Lifestyles and Changes (TLC) Unit at Frye Regional Medical Center South Campus is designed for mentally retarded/mentally ill adults ages 18 and above. The TLC Unit was created to serve this population when crises occur. In this 10-bed acute care program, adult patients may be able to gain reality orientation and develop independence in a structured setting specialized to meet their individual needs.

This unit is characterized by two distinct components. The first is a behavioral component. The color-coded behavior modification program focuses on such conduct as explosive outbursts and seeks to modify the behavior by offering alternative choices. The second is a psychotherapeutic component. The psychological needs of each patient are addressed through group intervention and behavioral therapy along with medication management.
